Anthropic’s CEO sounds the alarm on mass job extinction

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei just warned lawmakers and the public that AI could eliminate 50% of entry-level white-collar positions in the next five years and drive unemployment as high as 20%.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Amodei predicts AI will write 90% of software code within 6 months and virtually all code within a year, completely reshaping tech employment.

  • He also believes the impact extends to finance, law, consulting, and other white-collar jobs, with entry-level positions most vulnerable to automation.

  • Amodei urged lawmakers and AI companies to take action, saying most workers are “unaware that this is about to happen and “just don’t believe it”.

  • The CEO provided several ideas for addressing the issue, including better AI skilling and support, and policy solutions like a token tax” on AI companies.

Here’s what I think:

We all likely have friends or family who are completely unaware of the drastic changes underway — and many will choose to ignore Amodei’s warnings. While AI can bring massive changes for good, it will also come with what’s likely to be the swiftest transformation of the economy and society in history.

OpenAI's ‘Operator’ agent gets boost with new AI model

OpenAI has upgraded its ‘Operator’ agent by integrating the new o3 model, enhancing its reasoning capabilities and safety features.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • ‘Operator’ is an AI agent capable of autonomously browsing the web and interacting with specific software hosted in cloud-based virtual machines to complete user tasks. Previously, it relied on a custom version of GPT-4o.

  • The new ‘Operator’ model, called o3 Operator, is expected to significantly improve how Operator handles complex queries and has been “fine-tuned with additional safety data for computer use,” including datasets designed to “teach the model decision boundaries on confirmations and refusals.”

  • According to the technical report released by OpenAI, o3 Operator is more likely to refuse to perform “illicit” activities or search for sensitive personal data, and is less susceptible to a form of AI attack known as "prompt injection."

The update is available as a “research preview” to paying subscribers of OpenAI’s $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan.

Intel introduces new AI gaming coach

At Computex, Intel introduced a new AI assistant for video games, currently in active development, designed to provide real-time support and personalized tips during gameplay.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Inspired by tools like Nvidia’s Project ‘G Assist, which runs locally on the GPU to optimize settings, provide online info, and offer in-game help, Intel takes a different, more personalized approach. Their AI focuses on specific games and requires developers to integrate it, so it won’t work out of the box for every title.

  • The company demonstrated the new ‘AI Gaming Coach working with the game Black Myth: Wukong, offering suggestions on combat strategies, item searching, and more.

  • It is designed not to interfere with the gaming experience, displaying messages at the top of the screen and avoiding distractions and time lost searching for guides or tutorials.

  • This new technology runs on the NPU integrated into the new Intel Core Ultra processors, without using CPU or GPU resources. This means game performance is not affected, even on systems without a dedicated graphics card.

  • Intel has not yet confirmed the supported platforms, minimum requirements, or release date.

Anthropic’s new Voice Mode for Claude

Anthropic just announced the launch of its new Voice mode for its Claude mobile apps, becoming one of the last major AI labs to enable users to have natural spoken conversations with its AI assistant.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The beta feature is set to arrive for English-speaking users in the coming weeks and will run on Claude's latest Sonnet 4 model.

  • Users can flow naturally between speaking and typing, with five voice personalities available and real-time transcription displayed during chats.

  • Voice mode also integrates with Google Workspace for paid subscribers, allowing Claude to access calendars, docs, and Gmail with voice commands.

  • Free users receive 20-30 voice messages a month, with paid tiers getting “significantly higher” usage limits.

Synthesia co-founder’s 3D world AI startup

Synthesia co-founder Matthias Niessner just unveiledSpAItial’, a new startup aimed at creating AI systems capable of generating interactive 3D environments from texts and images.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The company is building Spatial Foundation Models (SFMs) that understand 3D space natively and can grasp geometry, physics, and material properties.

  • SpAItial's founding team includes former leaders from Synthesia, Google, and Meta, bringing expertise in 3D AI and neural rendering technologies.

  • Early demos generated photorealistic 3D rooms from simple text prompts, with applications spanning gaming, construction, VR, and robotics.

Here’s what I think:

While AI has mastered generating 2D images and videos, creating coherent, spatially aware 3D worlds remains a challenge. This new breed of models could enable anyone to create complex virtual environments with just a few words — tackling what many consider to be the next frontier in AI.
