Google Takes Gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2025

Google DeepMind’s Gemini has achieved gold medal–level performance at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), earning recognition as the first AI system to receive official gold-level grading from competition organizers.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • An advanced version of Gemini Deep Think managed to solve five of six exceptionally difficult problems, achieving 35 out of a possible 42 points and comfortably exceeding the gold medal threshold in the IMO, the world’s most prestigious competition for young mathematicians.

  • The system completed its work following all competition rules and within the standard 4.5-hour time limit, operating end-to-end in natural language and producing rigorous mathematical proofs directly from the official problem descriptions.

  • The model’s results were officially graded and certified by IMO coordinators using the same criteria applied to student solutions.

  • The company also took a subtle jab at OpenAI, saying they held off announcing the feat on Friday out of respect for the IMO Board’s request that AI labs wait to share results until "after the official results had been verified by independent experts and the students had rightly received the acclamation they deserved".

Here’s what I think:

Criticisms around validity are inevitable, given that achieving gold in the IMO has been a longstanding goal for AI and was once thought to be near impossible. Interestingly, the goal was achieved by an experimental model not yet publicly available, meaning OpenAI and Google certainly have more up their sleeve.

OpenAI’s Copilot cuts medical errors in Kenya

OpenAI partnered with Penda Health to conduct research on using AI copilots in medical clinics in Nairobi, Kenya, finding that clinicians using the system made fewer diagnostic errors and treatment mistakes compared to those working without AI.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The AI Consult system monitors clinical decisions in real-time, flagging potential issues instead of dictating care — with the doctors fully in control.

  • The study encompassed nearly 40K patient visits, with clinicians using AI showing a 16% reduction in diagnostic errors and 13% fewer treatment errors.

  • All surveyed clinicians reported quality improvements, with 75% labeling the impact “substantial” and calling the tool a safety net and educational resource.

  • The study found the success hinged on three factors: capable models (GPT-4o), integration that avoided care disruption, and active, personalized training.

Here’s what I think:

This is a great example of AI’s impact on healthcare in underserved areas, but also serves as a blueprint to factors (workflows, training, etc.) that helped the copilot become a success. As more clinics integrate AI, these lessons could help ensure new tools actually improve care without added complexity for frontline staff.

Google decodes ancient Rome with AI

Google DeepMind just launchedAeneas’, an AI system that helps historians restore, date, and decipher damaged Latin inscriptions and pinpoint their origins across the Roman Empire.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Aeneas analyzes text and images from inscription fragments, suggesting words and matching them to similar texts in a database of 176,000 ancient writings.

  • It attributes inscriptions to specific Roman provinces with 72% accuracy, dates them within 13 years, and restores damaged text at 73% accuracy.

  • 23 historians tested the system and found its contextual suggestions helpful in 90% of cases, with confidence in key tasks jumping 44%.

  • The tool is freely available for researchers and can be adapted to other ancient languages, with Google DeepMind open-sourcing its code and dataset.

OpenAI readies GPT-5 for August debut

OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch its next-gen GPT-5 in August, according to a report from The Verge — with CEO Sam Altman also speaking about the new model this week in a conversation with comedian Theo Von.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • GPT-5 will combine language capabilities with o3-style reasoning into one system, eliminating the need to choose between models for various tasks.

  • Sam Altman described testing GPT-5 as a "here it is moment," claiming it instantly solved questions that made him feel "useless relative to the AI."

  • Altman said GPT-5 will be released “soon” but noted it will not have the capabilities used to achieve the recent gold medal at the IMO competition.

Here’s what I think:

GPT-5 comes with months of hype and extremely high expectations, but this next generation of models feels like a true step into the unknown. With Altman and others openly talking about existential shifts and mind-blowing capabilities, August could be the next major raising of the AI bar.

Prompt of the week

Solve any problem

Prompt: "You are operating as an elite cognitive simulation engine, designed to emulate a high-level roundtable of historical and modern intellectuals, thinkers, innovators, and leaders. Each advisor brings a unique worldview, expertise, and reasoning process that must stay true to their known beliefs and philosophy. The user faces a complex dilemma requiring multi-faceted analysis where contradictions and tensions are valuable insights, not obstacles to resolve. Your simulation must balance intellectual rigor with emotional intelligence, allowing debate and disagreement to surface naturally while guiding toward reflective synthesis rather than rushed consensus.

Adopt the role of an expert cognitive simulation engine and advisory council facilitator tasked with orchestrating a roundtable discussion among five chosen historical or contemporary figures. Your primary objective is to simulate authentic perspectives from each advisor, facilitate meaningful debate with reasoned counterpoints, and synthesize diverse viewpoints into actionable insights in a structured dialogue format.

My decision-making dilemma: [INSERT YOUR SPECIFIC QUESTION, CONFLICT, OR DECISION]
- My chosen advisor 1: [INSERT NAME AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM]
- My chosen advisor 2: [INSERT NAME AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM]
- My chosen advisor 3: [INSERT NAME AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM]
- My chosen advisor 4: [INSERT NAME AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM]
- My chosen advisor 5: [INSERT NAME AND WHY YOU CHOSE THEM]

Structure your council simulation with these sections:
● Advisory Panel Intro - Summarize the dilemma and introduce each advisor with their unique strengths
● Roundtable Discussion - Role-play each advisor's initial perspective on the issue
● Crossfire Debate - Simulate disagreements with reasoned counterpoints between advisors
● Synthesis Summary - Highlight core insights, tensions, and tradeoffs that emerged
● Final Reflective Prompt - End with a profound question for deeper self-reflection

Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step. Present your output in the specified format with clear section headers, maintaining a thoughtful and intellectually rigorous tone throughout.”
